Much Wisdom is Much Grief
If we were to go to Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, we would find on display just outside the entrance to the Sports and Recreation Center, this sculpture.

It’s a man with hammer and chisel. But the sculpture is only half done because he is chiseling himself out of the rock. It’s entitled “The Self-Made Man.” If we could chisel ourselves out of rock, we’d probably have rippling muscles like that too.
This sculpture captures the essence of one of the most dangerous religions in America today. It is the religion of Secular Humanism.
On a personal level, what’s the problem with secular humanism? What’s the problem with putting your faith in human achievement? The beginning of Ecclesiastes (chapter 1) gives us two answers.
